FIFTY YEARS SINCE HILLSBOROUGH BOYS BLAZED A TRAIL TO SCANDINAVIA

IN A couple of weeks time the club will pass a remarkable milestone in its history… the 50th anniversary of its first trip to a major international tournament, the world famous Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Since then the club has played hundreds of matches against teams from other countries, many of them from far corners of the world, and played in tournaments all over the UK but also in places like Norway, Spain, Denmark, Germany and Finland.
However, the club’s first groundbreaking major excursion into Europe nearly didn’t happen at all…
Originally club founder Brian Ogle saw an advertisement in a football magazine looking for UK teams to play in the world’s number one youth international tournament, the Gothia Cup, and promptly decided the club would widen its frontiers to Scandinavia after just a few years playing in the Dundonald Junior League.
Plans were laid and places were booked to send a team to Gothenburg, on Sweden’s west coast, flying from Belfast.
However, just a few weeks from departure, the tour operator running the trip made a shock announcement. The team would be going overland to Sweden not flying as planned, a devastating blow but one which did not de-rail the excitement of the local lads.
If anything the marathon land and sea, three coach trips and three ferry crossings, trip to Sweden made the whole adventure more attractive and more eagerly awaited.
The team left on a Thursday afternoon in the second week of July with a coach trip to Larne, then it was an overnight stay in Stranraer. Then the next day another coach trip to catch the Saturday afternoon Danish Seaways ferry from Newcastle to Esbjerg in Denmark. Arriving the next morning the party boarded their third coach for the trip north to the port of Frderikshavn to catch the third ferry, the Stena Line three-hour crossing to their final destination, Gothenburg.
It was an exhausted but jubilant group that reached their accommodation at Katrinelunds School right beside the New Ullevi stadium and immediately headed for the all weather pitches in the city centre to see where they would be playing the next day.
They found they were playing with more than 6000 players from more than a dozen countries with something like 200 games taking place in the city every day. Today this figure has tripled, even quadrupled in size, and the Gothia Cup is firmly established as the best youth international tournament in the world, with up to 20 Hillsborough Boys teams taking part in the various age groups over the years.
That first team, in the under 14 age group, had their first game at 11.00 am the next morning after their arrival and won 3-0 against a Swedish side, Rodsle BK, then followed up with a win over a Danish team Stenstrup BK. Two wins out of three made sure of qualification for the knockout rounds but unfortunately the red and blacks bowed out in heartbreaking fashion, losing on penalty kicks to Swedish side Naseby.
The team went on to play several friendlies in their eight days in Gothenburg before making the long land and sea trip back to Northern Ireland, disappointed yes, but absolutely delighted with their experience and determined to go back again to the Gothia Cup.
Most of the players did in fact return the following year again in the under 14 age group. The all conquering local side, winning all three trophies in the Dundonald Junior League, proved they could make an impact in Sweden too, reaching the Gothia Cup final after a series of amazing matches on their way to the final, most memorable being the clash with Stockholm side Hammarby in the quarter final.
In the final however the locals lost in heartbreaking fashion. Leading 1-0 against Lunds BK with just minutes to go they conceded an equaliser from a free kick. There were no goals in extra time but tragically Hillsborough lost 4-3 on penalty kicks when the Lunds goalkeeper saved two spot kicks.
It was a heartbroken side who received their runner-up medals from Bobby Charlton although there was some compensation in defeat - the team was awarded a trophy for the Best Sportsmen in the 350 team tournament.
The team which made the marathon trip to Sweden in 1976 was:
Eddie Beattie, Colin Jeffers, Alan Moore, Ivan Forsythe, Ashley Orr, Gerald McMullan, David Bradford, Garth McDonald, Vivian Campbell, Michael Kirkwood, Michael McFarland, John Montgomery, Paul Mooney, Gary Patterson, Ian McDonald and Ashley McKinley.
Officials were: Brian Ogle, Francis Farr and Ronald Copeland.
