We Are A Club
One of our coaches recently said, “We, the club, are about to embark on a Foyle Cup trip, one we are all excited about. Great teams, traveling up to Derry – Londonderry for a week of football football football”.
Recently, a few parents of young players have expressed their opinions regarding team selection.
To these people, we say We Are a Club. At times, your son will be selected to play with a team that he does not normally play with. He is still playing for Hillsborough Boys. You can help here by explaining that valuable lessons can be learnt from this. Motivate your son by explaining that talented players are also team players. He should use the opportunity to shine and help others. Transferring between and adapting to new teams is a vital footballing skill that the very best players possess.
The recent climb to the top of Slieve Donard by four of our Foyle cup teams across different year groups was a fantastic example of how, more and more, we are working together as a Club – not as individual teams.
Next season, Parent Education classes will explain what is acceptable and what is not. If it is, indeed, the case that parental pressure has convinced some children that they are failures if they do not play for a particular team, we will address this. If we, as a Club, have played any part in allowing this perception to develop, we will address this.
To the majority of parents who give our Coaches amazing support every week, you know who you are and this letter isn’t for you. Thank you. Keep up the good work. We really do appreciate your support.
